Description of learning experience outside of school:
Considering the thousands of learning experiences I have had outside of school, it was difficult to choose one that I wanted to actually discuss. The summer after I graduated from high school I traveled with a friend to Europe. My friend is from Paris and I met her during my senior year when she enrolled at my school after she graduated in France. This was an incredible learning experience for me since it was the first time I had left the United States and my family for a considerable length of time.
I grew up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, which is a lovely and safe community but not exactly the most diverse. I had very little experience with other cultures and found myself interested in these various lifestyles. Our first stop was in Paris, which is a sprawling metropolis and very different from the suburbs of East Greenwich. I noticed that there were many less fortunate citizens, some of which were homeless. I would like to remind the reader that I was 18-years-old and had not witnessed anything like this at this time. In addition, I was amazed by the diversity of the people living in the city. There existed people of all socio-economic backgrounds. I truly respected and appreciated this diversity.
Before my travels, I had some preconceived ideas about the way of life of Europeans since my mother was from France herself and always spoke about her experiences. After arriving I discovered that the ideas that my mother had imparted were different that those I was experiencing. This taught me to not take others beliefs for my own and to formulate my own opinions based on my experiences.
